CARE OF BONSAI TREES
Just like any other plants in the backyard, focal attention and great care of bonsai trees are much needed from its owners. Here are some tips and guidelines on how to provide proper care for your bonsai trees, so that in the long run it will grow healthy, beautiful, and live longer:
• Watering – It is only proper to be watchful in watering your bonsai trees. Some bonsais will die quickly if it lacks water, and some will also die quickly if you give too much water. More often than not, the soil that is utilized to grow bonsai plants is porous and drains quickly. Even the contour and the shape of the pots give factors in the soil in letting water out. Research on the specifications of the bonsais will be a great move, since it will help you how much water is needed for your specific bonsai. Also, just for safety, look for further improvements of the bonsai after the specific amount of the water is placed. Put some rocks in tray full of water, and put it near the plants. Humidity plays a big part on most of the bonsai plants.
• Pruning – Pruning the bonsai trees are very much needed not just to keep it healthy and growing, it also plays an important value on the aesthetic department of the tree. Pruning is when you try to reduce the roots and the foliage of the tree, by taking out unhealthy branches, reducing the roots, and pinching the leaves, which is done either once or twice a year. Be careful with pruning, it can be damage your bonsain. It also helps in keeping it beautiful, as leaves will grow smaller every time it is pruned.
• Wiring – to give your bonsai plants a more dramatic shape, wiring is considered. It is the method of wrapping up the bonsai in either copper or aluminum wires that will look like braces of the tree. This is to give the tree a path in what manner it will grow. Wiring should be done carefully done though; you must check which kind of wire to use first, and never wrap it too tight, as it will cause scar and damage to the trees.
• Fertilizing – Fertilizing is a thing that should need proper attention, as some fertilizers might contain chemicals that are harmful to the plants. The best thing to do is follow the instructions carefully that is given in the box or manual. It is good to use water soluble fertilizer, but only when the soil is wet.
• Re-potting – this is a very crucial step in taking care of your bonsais, so doing this really cautiously is highly implemented. Repotting should be done two to three years. When you are going to move your bonsai to another pot, trim the roots first to about one-third of the root ball, to keep the plant in its fair state.
