With so many gardening tools and gadgets available it can be difficult to know what you really need to get started. You do not need everything – just a few well chosen quality gardening tools. With a new plot you will need these three tools as a start.
Garden Spade
A good solid garden spade will do its work for many years. It is used for digging and skimming off the surface before turning the soil. It can also be used as a shovel to clear garden rubbish and debris. Some modern garden spades have metal handles but I still prefer a wooden handle. I think it is more comfortable to work with as it has more ‘give’ in it.
Use a Garden Shredder to help with pruning and garden clearing
The garden shredder has two main uses. One is for reducing large braches and twigs down for disposal. It can also be used to shred plants in preparation for the compost heap. A third use is for making your own mulch although not all types of garden rubbish are suitable for this.
In general, all garden shredders have a high watt motor and come with a silent crushing system. This means that they are powerful but will not be overly noisy. The garden shredder will also help you in shredding debris from pruning your hedges.
Cultivator for making easy work of turning over your soil
For new or neglected gardens you will need to use a garden cultivator to turn over the ground. You can use a garden spade but this is back breaking work. A cultivator will reduce your work effort and time hugely and give you more time for the landscaping and planting
Some cultivators are available with patented tines to help in cutting the hard compacted soil smoothly. This tool will be especially handy if you are planting in an area that has not been worked in for a while and which has very hard, difficult soil.
With these three tools you can make a start on your garden .Once you have a clear plot you can look at expanding your garden toolkit with other items designed to help you plant and grow your garden.
I would recommend buying garden tools from specialist suppliers rather than chain stores. You will find better quality tools in proper garden centers that will cost a bit more but last you for many years of gardening
