Bonsai
Watching bonsai trees grow and forming them into amazing sculptures is an absorbing and very rewarding pastime. Growing bonsai trees is not an expensive pastime with only a few specialist tools needed, but a magnificant bonsai can be more of a statement in your home than many ornaments can. A bonsai tree is a true living sculpture.
Bonsai are container grown plants or trees that are developed to be a miniature of of its full size tree. Bonsai are created from nearly any perennial woody stemmed trees or shrubs that grow branches and is able to grow in miniature through pot confinement with the aid from root and crown trimming.
Bonsai trees can be grown from seed, young shoots lifted from the wild, (please have regard for any laws in respect of removing wild plants or trees in your region), or can be ordered as mature planted bonsai trees. Obviously growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest route, but you will then have total control over how your bonsai will look.
Bonsai trees are planted in special bonsai pots that restrict the development of the roots but also enhance the beauty of your bonsai. Specialist soil mixtures can be bought that provide the perfect environment for your bonsai tree to grow in.
Many specialist techniques are used to shape and give character to your bonsai tree including leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting on other plants, short term dwarfing and deadwood, (aging and adding personality to the bark). Few specialist tools are required to shape bonsai trees, and these are easy to come by very cheaply. Everything you need to get started can easily be purchased from a specialist bonsai nursery.
Bonsai trees can be had as indoor and outdoor types, some bonsai are improved if left outside during summer and then brought inside in the winter.
For those that like the idea, but does not want to keep bonsai, you can purchase artificial bonsai trees.
