If we here at cool garden things had to pick a “Coolest Garden Thing” our pyramid and spinning composters are definitely frontrunners. Composting is great. Composting is an excellent choice for the gardener with a green thumb and a green mind. The process is simple: place all organic waste (lawn clippings, kitchen food waste, etc.) in the composter and let nature do it’s work to create nutrient rich dirt you can use on your garden. All you have to do to upkeep your compost is keep it moist (perhaps with a cool garden things rain barrel!)
Compost provides a whole host of services for your garden. According to the EPA compost helps your garden’s soil by aiding in the creation of beneficial micro-organisms which help process compost waste to create nutrient rich dirt. Composting can clean old, worn out soil by filtering pesticides and chlorinated hyrdrocarbons that remain from chemical fertilizers. It can even keep our environment clean. Organic waste does not break down if it is placed in a landfill next to unorganic waste, the bacteria don’t have enough to survive, composting at home is a better environment for breaking down waste in a responsible, environmentally friendly fashion. Any effort to decrease community waste is beneficial to the environment. A composter is a small change to your lifestyle that can make a big difference in your garden!
Composting is something easy you can do and provides a rich bounty of fertilizer. Consider what you spend on plant food, and then consider all of that money could be saved by using a simple compost system. Fertilizers from the store contain chemicals that can be harmful to the environment and can run into groundwater, contaminating local water supplies. Compost is 100% natural, so you don’t have to worry about harming the environment for the sake of your garden!
