You will grow most of your vegetables outdoors in your garden. You can grow vegetables indoors however and for some types of plants this can produce a better crop than outdoors. One reason for doing indoor vegetable gardening is that you can grow plants that would not grow outside because of frosts or other climate. I have tried peppers and tomatoes indoors with great success. You need to have good light so a conservatory is the ideal location.

The other reason for growing vegetables indoors is that you can extend the growing season. This year I had courgette and tomato plants starting in march to be planted out once the frost had gone. I had some very early crops because of this. My second crop is just coming now so I have already had 10 weeks of my own vegetables. This in spite of the wettest UK summer you can imagine.

Tips for Starting Your Own Indoor Vegetable Garden

There also no doubts the fact that indoor vegetable gardening is not as difficult when it concerns preparing and maintaining the soil as would be the case with outdoor vegetable gardening. By repeatedly planting vegetables in outdoor soil, there is a consequent loss of nutrients and another problem with outdoor vegetable gardening is that it requires using more fertilizers and diseases.

Indoor vegetable gardening on the other hand, does not require much use of fertilizers though maintaining proper levels of fertilizers is a vexing problem that needs to be dealt with adequately. Also, when it concerns indoor vegetable gardening, there is need to learn about how to properly balance drainage of water with retaining suitable levels of waters.

A common indoor vegetable gardening problem that you will also have to face is that indoor soil does not control itself as well as does outdoor soil and there are also many dangers involved, especially if you make the mistake of giving too much water to the soil.

There is also no simple way of automatically watering your indoor vegetable garden and in some cases, the mess and the cost actually makes automatic watering a most impractical option. Another concern as far as indoor vegetable gardening is concerned is giving the vegetables enough light. This is not a problem with outdoor vegetable gardening because if you have chosen the spot for your outdoor vegetable garden well, chances are it will get plenty of natural sunlight.

As far as lighting and indoor vegetable gardening go, you may even find it necessary to shift your plants all through the day so as to ensure that the vegetables get light wherever sunlight is entering into the home at different times of the day. The bright side is that in case there is too much sunlight, you can always pull the shades and protect your plants from the danger of excessive heat.

The best part about indoor vegetable gardening is that if you place your plants near a window you will give the plants the advantage of a greenhouse without having to incur the expenses or do the work required for growing plants in a greenhouse.

For those who are worried about getting the most out of their indoor vegetable gardening or any other form of gardening, it would certainly pay to check out some of the better vegetable gardening books that reveal secrets about how to improve your garden. Once you have understood how to get the most out of your gardening endeavors, it is then up to you to choose between indoor vegetable gardening and outdoor vegetable gardening. However, in most cases the decision is made for you and it depends on the on the amount of space that you have available for your garden.

Be adventurous and try out a few plants indoors in the first year and find out what your location will allow.

Beginner gardeners often do not know where to start when faced with a new plot. There are so many books and tips available that it can be difficult to be sure of what you are doing. There are certain important aspects that you do need to consider before getting that garden spade out and going for it.

Garden Site – The Location of Your Plot

One of the most important vegetable gardening tips, easily, involves deciding where to make your garden. Choosing a garden site is going to have a significant effect on whether your plants are going to do well or poorly. An area exposed to full or near-full sunlight with deep, well-drained, fertile soil is ideal.

You should never make a garden site near a water outlet and you need to make sure that the area you choose is free of competition from existing shrubs or trees.

Planting – What are you going to grow

You should start your vegetable plot with simple to grow plants. Just buy them online of from your local garden centre and plant them out. It is easier to get good results this way. You can try growing from seed in your second year once you have more confidence in your growing skills.

Another of the first vegetable gardening tips you should learn involves the actual planting of the plants. You should always avoid transplanting too deep or too shallow because this often results in developed roots aborting. Some crops are easily transplanted bare-root while others will need to be transplanted in containers.

Fertilizer

Proper fertilizer is essential for any successful vegetable garden. The next tip here is to use organic fertilizer. This is for a few reasons, but more than anything because organic fertilizers are much safer to use and less damaging to the plants. They are also much better for the environment, and every little thing that you can do to save the environment these days is crucial.

Design

The design of your garden is what the next of the most important vegetable gardening tips revolves around. You want to design your garden so that the crop rotation is practiced, and this is imperative because rotation primarily helps by preventing diseases from living over from one season to another. Avoid growing the same vegetable in the same location more often than once every three years.

Gardening is a very fun and enjoyable activity, and when you have fresh vegetables produced from your very own garden, you are going to feel so proud. Just make sure that you take all the different gardening tips and tricks into serious consideration and really use them to your advantage so that you can have the best overall success with your gardening and come out of it all with fresh, nutritious, delicious vegetables.

If you are starting gardening it makes sense to go the organic route. You will have lots to learn and it is better to learn the good methods of organic gardening right from the start. The produce often tastes better and you have the knowledge that you are not harming your garden environment with bad chemicals.

The process of getting started in organic vegetable gardening really does not have to be all that difficult, and you just need to follow a few important steps so that you have the most success with your organic vegetable gardening as possible.

Plants

The first step is to choose the type of plants that you want to include in your organic vegetable gardening. If you have little to no gardening experience, you are going to want to start off with some of the easier plants, such as tomatoes and potatoes.

Tomatoes are particularly easy to plant in organic vegetable gardening, and all you need to do is make sure that the last frost has passed, and then you need to choose the garden site. Make sure that you pick one that is going to get enough sun throughout the day and then you simply spread some compost, dig a hole for each plant and put the partially grown tomato plants into these holes.

Compost

You will benefit greatly by using organic vegetable gardening compost. It will improve soil structure, texture and aeration, and not only that but as well it will help by increasing the soil’s water holding capacity and promote soil fertility and stimulate healthy root development.

Companion Planting

It is very important to think about companion planting. Basically what this means is that when you are working with different types of plants, you want to make sure that the ones you have together are going to work. Companion planting is another way of working with nature, as some dissimilar plants have developed a symbiotic relationship – they help each other to survive.

You will therefore get the best plants if you take consideration in regards to which plants you are growing together.

Stick to A Plan

Remember that the only way you are going to have success with your organic vegetable gardening is if you have a plan, so you need to make sure that you have carefully thought everything out before you even try to get started. As long as you do this, your vegetable gardening will be a very rewarding experience, because not only will you have fun and enjoy yourself but as well you will end up with a terrific vegetable harvest at the end.

I have a tiny plot but I still plan it very carefully. In fact it has to be planned carefully for me to get everything in. I rotate crops each year and feed the whole plot with home made compost in January. I do not use any shop bought plant food or compost as I am able to produce all my own.

You can buy almost any type of vegetable you could think of from your local supermarket. So why would anyone take up vegetable gardening as a hobby? In my home town there is a 2 year waiting list for allotments – 2 years! Seed growers have reported that vegetable seed sales have overtaken flower seeds for the first time ever.

Well there are a number of reasons why people are returning to growing their own vegetables.

Vegetable gardening is a challenge.

The whole business of growing your own food is a bit of an adventure and the satisfaction of eating your own home grow vegetables is immensely rewarding. But to get to the point where you have completed the growing process can also be difficult as you learn the vagaries of how to sow and nurture your own plants.

Vegetable Gardening is great exercise.

There is no other activity quite as healthy as vegetable gardening and that is why many people take so much pleasure in it and are often found spending a lot of time in their backyard. It can be so absorbing that you do not notice the time and can have been doing a 2 or 3 hour gardening workout before you notice.

Eating your own vegetables is very healthy

Because you will pick your crop and usually eat them within minutes you are eating more healthily. Food that has been packed and stored loses much of its nutritious value before getting to the supermarket shelves. I can go into my garden and pick some peas, courgettes or tomatoes and know that they are full of vitamins. You can almost taste the goodness in freshly picked vegetables.

Your own vegetables taste better

If you have ever tasted home grown vegetables you will know that the flavours are fantastic. Fresh radishes are more spicy. Fresh cucumbers taste like a cooling drink and your own tomatoes are completely scrumptious. If you do not believe this grow your own vegetables this year and experience this for yourself

You can grow special varieties of vegetables in your own garden

You may not know this but the types of vegetables you can grow in your own garden are not the same as commercially grown crops. Shops sell vegetables that have been developed for mass production and quick cropping. Commercial growers haven’t got time for some of the varieties available to the home vegetable gardener. This is a shame because the types you can grow on a small scale are different and often superior to the mass produced ones you buy in the shops.

I hope you can see the value of having your own vegetable garden. Once you have your first year of crops you will never look back to relying on shop bought food.
